How to cross the street in Hồ Chí Minh City
Millions of motorbikes, few traffic lights that anyone waits for, and no gap in the traffic that ever looks big enough. Crossing in Saigon feels impossible the first time. It is not — but the rules you brought from home will work against you.
The short answer
Walk at one steady, calm speed and keep going. Do not run. Do not stop in the middle. Do not step back. The riders will flow around you.
Why walking steadily works
A rider coming towards you is not waiting for the road to clear. They are predicting where you will be in two seconds and steering for the space where you will not be — a little ahead of you, or a little behind.
That only works if your speed is predictable. The moment you speed up, slow down or freeze, the prediction is wrong, and the gap the rider aimed for is now where you are standing. Most close calls happen to pedestrians who hesitated, not to the ones who kept walking.
Before you step out
Use a pedestrian crossing or a light where there is one — some drivers respect them, and it helps. Look at the traffic coming towards you and wait for a stretch that is thinner, not empty; an empty road may never come.
If you are nervous, cross next to a local and match their pace. It is the fastest way to learn the rhythm.
While you cross
Keep your eyes on the traffic coming towards you, not on your phone. Look at the riders; eye contact tells them you have seen them and you are not about to do anything sudden. A calm, raised hand can help too.
Walk in a straight line at the same pace all the way. If a rider seems to be heading straight for you, trust the steady pace — the rider is almost always aiming behind or in front of you.
Buses, cars and trucks are different
The steady-walking rule is about motorbikes, which can steer around you. Buses, cars and trucks cannot swerve the same way, and many will not slow down for you.
Let large vehicles pass. Stop before you step into their lane, not in the middle of it, and wait for the gap they leave behind. This is the one moment when waiting is the right call.
Look both ways — even on a one-way street
Riders sometimes come the wrong way down a lane because it is the shortest route, and when a road is full they ride on the sidewalk. Check both directions before you start, and do not treat the curb as a guaranteed safe zone.
Rain and night
In the rainy season, roughly May to November, heavy afternoon showers are common, and riders keep going in their ponchos. They see you later in the rain and at night, so give yourself a bigger margin and wear something light if you can. The rule does not change: walk steadily and do not stop halfway.
Practise before you go
Saigon Crossing is a free browser game built on exactly this rule. Your only controls are three walking speeds and eye contact; a Predictability Meter shows how readable you are to the traffic. Walk steadily and the bikes part around you. Change speed and they cannot.
It starts in a quiet alley and ends at a rush-hour roundabout in the rain, with ten real Saigon streets in between.
